Could this Sunday’s British Grand Prix be the last of its kind in England? As of this writing, the race’s future going forward is very much in doubt. To no surprise, Brit Lewis Hamilton is the clear favorite on the F1 odds at our online sportsbook.

British GP History

The British Grand Prix debuted in 1926, ran for two years and then went away until 1948. It has been held at its current location of the Silverstone Circuit since 1987. Silverstone also was the site of the first-ever Grand Prix, hosting the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship round on May 13, 1950. Giuseppe Farina, who’d take that year’s title, won the race in his Alfa Romeo 158.

At the 2018 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton compared a flat-out lap around Silverstone to flying a fighter jet. The circuit has a length of 5.891 km and there are 52 laps for a race distance of 306.198 km. The lap record at Silverstone is 1:30.621 by Hamilton in 2017.

After the high-speed Turn 1 at Abbey, taken in eighth gear at 186 mph, drivers must tricky Turns 3 & 4 at The Loop and ensure good traction for a fast exit onto the Wellington Straight. After braking for Brooklands, it’s critical that drivers make a good exit out of Luffield at Turn 7 for the fastest sector of the lap. Ahead of them is the daunting Copse corner and the ultra-fast sweeps of Maggotts, Becketts, and Chapel taken at over 180 mph. The final section of the Silverstone lap features the legendary corners Stowe and Club.

Sides Closing On Deal To Save Race?

On July 11, 2017, the owners of Silverstone activated a break clause in their contract meaning unless a new contract is signed soon, 2019 will be the final year the British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone. The Northamptonshire track had a deal to host the race until 2027 but it triggered its break clause due to rising costs. The previous deal, signed by Formula One’s former chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, meant that the costs rose by five percent every year. As it is, the British Grand Prix barely breaks even, despite being the best attended single event in England each summer with 140,000 fans expected on race day.

That said, Formula One and Silverstone are locked in talks with the hope of announcing a deal to safeguard the future of the British Grand Prix before this weekend’s race. A deal for 2020 is expected perhaps as early as Wednesday.

Hamilton has described this race as “a Grand Prix we can never lose” and calls Silverstone “the most fun rollercoaster ride of the year.” Liberty Media, which owns F1, also still remains interested in the concept of a grand prix on the streets of London to sit alongside Silverstone.

New Track Surface & Favorites

Drivers will have to adjust to a new surface this year, adding some more intrigue. Friday’s practice sessions will be more key than ever as teams get to grips with a newly-laid Silverstone surface. This is the second time that Silverstone has been resurfaced in the last two years, and follows the cancellation of the British MotoGP round under heavy rain last year. This second resurfacing took place in June to smooth out the circuit even further.

2019 Formula 1 British Grand Prix Odds & Expert Analysis.

Ferrari has yet to win a race this year and team boss Mattia Binotto doesn’t feel like that’s coming Sunday, either: “Silverstone is one of the toughest tracks of the season, providing a real test of a car’s set-up and balance. Tires also come under a lot of strain here and the amount they wear plays a key role in how your race pans out. … We do not expect Silverstone to suit our car particularly well, but at every race, we have seen that the balance of power can change, often unexpectedly.” Ferrari’s drivers are Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc.

Odd that Binotto would say that because Ferrari has won at this track a record 17 times and Vettel did last year. Hamilton had won the previous four and five overall in this race. No driver has won the British Grand Prix six times.

Team Mercedes has had a chance of rallying for the win by leaving Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas out when the Safety Car was called into action late in the race, while Ferrari and Red Bull pitted for fresh tires. But ultimately, Vettel had too much pace on the softer tires and snatched the lead from Bottas. Hamilton also moved past the Finn, but he didn’t have the performance to attack Vettel and had to settle for second with Kimi Raikkonen third.

Hamilton is the -155 favorite this week at Mybookie with Bottas at +350, Leclerc at +500 and Vettel +600. Hamilton has six wins this season and still leads the F1 drivers’ championship by 31 points from teammate Bottas. In the constructors’ championship, Mercedes are top with 363 points while second-placed Ferrari have 228 and Red Bull have 169 in third.
